Must See Photos: Unbelievable Pictures of the Expulsion from Jerusalem in 1948

The following photos from Life Magazine are very telling, in terms of the suffering of those who were kicked out from Jerusalem.

It behooves us to look at them and remember what these refugees had to endure:

I'm sorry if you had the impression that I was talking about the Arabs who left Israel--these are pictures of the Jewish residents of Jerusalem who were forced to leave by the Arab forces--for example, the guy holding the gun below.
Jerusalem Jews evacuating their homes in 1948 -

not to be able to return until 1967.

Not everyone could escape the Arabs in time

and were forced to surrender.
The above pictures are from The Muqata: Jerusalem 1948 - The Jewish Naqba, and he has more.

He adds that he discovered that that these pictures are part of a huge collection, all originally posted on the Ben-Atlas Blog: (LIFE in Israel in 1948Part 1Part 2Part 3

From My Right Word, here are pictures of the 1936 ethnic cleansing of Jews from their houses in the Muslim Quarter of Old Jerusalem via the Jaffa Gate:

Also check out Emet m'Tsiyon, who has pictures of The Hurvah Synagogue before Being Blown up by the Arab Legion of Transjordan, Courtesy of His Britannic Majesty's Generals and Officers

UPDATE: See these pictures of the same area in Jerusalem before and after Arab looting.

  1. Yup. We talk of the Nakba as though it related solely in terms of Arab flight and dispossession.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Eitan Bronstein and Zochrot to bring THAT Jewish Nakba you profiled here to the Israeli public's attention.
