FROM OLD TO ANCIENT IN 30 SECONDS: I already knew that I was old. Sunday I was at the Bar Mitzvah of the son of a former roommate. I had not seen him since he was an infant--so I started off "I remember you from when you were just..." and I made a mental note that now I knew I was getting old.

Today, my daughter was looking at my cellphone and read out loud: "Verizon Wireless." I asked her if she knew what 'wireless' meant. She didn't, so I started to explain to her, "There was a time that telephones had no wires..." and suddenly I realized that I had just jumped to a whole new level.

And there's no turning back.
