The Wilton Police Dept. joined with the Connecticut regional office of the Anti-Defamation League, and UJA/Federation Westport Weston Wilton Norwalk this week to report publicly on a series of hate crimes in the town. Representatives of the three organizations spoke at a May 15 press conference at Wilton Town Hall, organized by ADL.Technorati Tag: Anti-Semitism.
The incidents occurred between April 1 and May 12.
On April 1, a swastika and phallic symbols were spray-painted on a home-owner's garage. On April 27 and 28, lawn signs advertising the April 29 Israel Fair in Westport were defaced in an anti-Semitic manner, and placed on several lawns. Swastikas and other profanity were spray-painted on two garage doors and a shed late Saturday, May 5. On the weekend of May 12, additional racial and anti-Semitic slurs were found spray-painted on several garages, including a swastika and “the N-word,” reports Randi Pincus, assistant director of ADL's Connecticut regional office.
What is most striking about the vandalism, Pincus says, is that the anti-Semitic slurs were serious and extensive, and went beyond simple vandalism or the spur-of-the-moment scrawling of a swastika.
“They entered the realm that suggests involvement with or knowledge of white supremacist or neo-Nazi movements,” she says.
