ISRAELI NEWSPAPERS LOSES THEIR TRAIN OF THOUGHT: Three new Hebrew newspapers are going to be coming out in Israel soon--and they will be free. The idea will be based on the international trend of providing free newspapers for people to read on the train.

Great idea...but there is a problem:
"But part of the problem is that, unlike in New York and London, where these papers have really caught on due to the targeting of subway passengers, this country has no real subway system."
That Israeli entrepreneurial spirit.

  1. But Israel has a pretty extensive bus system. I don't understand the concentration on subways.

  2. Good point. The article does say that, "These papers are all part of the popular international trend of free newspapers distributed in subway and bus stations designed to pass the travel time while gently presenting the major events of the day."

So it is odd to stress the lack of developed trains. I don't know for sure, but I think reading a paper is more popular on the train than on a bus. On trains, there is not much to look at and the noise makes it harder to talk. It is just more impersonal and people are more likely to escape into a newspaper. Buses are different.
