"The danger from Iran is grave," the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said Tuesday. "It is real, and my goal will be to eliminate this threat."Very impressive, and the rhetoric had the desired affect on his audience--but "everything" isn't everything it's cracked up to be:
Obama promised Israel supporters, "I will do everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," then repeated for emphasis: ". . . Everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon — everything."
"I will always stand up for Israel's right to defend itself in the United Nations and around the world," he added.
America has come to know how well Obama can work a crowd, but anyone in the room who thought the senator who opposed removing Saddam Hussein was now giving a signal that he would bomb Iran during his first 100 days hasn't been paying attention. Why didn't he just say so?
Obama's official foreign policy position, found on his campaign Web site, makes it clear what "everything" means when it comes to Iran. It amounts to "tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions."
"We will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation."[emphasis added]
