The Insane Asylum That Is The Middle East

There is nothing the Israelis can do to appease this kind of reckless stupidity. They are hated in large part because the people who hate them are mad.
Michael Totten on Egypt, Conspiracy Theories and War

Michael Totten writes in response to Bret Stephens' op-ed about the political imbecility of Egypt, following its accusation that a recent shark attack was set up by Israel's Mossad.

Specifically, he warns of the the impending danger in Egypt:

One day Egypt’s current government will be replaced. And if it’s replaced by a regime that reflects the “street” and is popular — watch out.
Expanding on the distinction between the regime and the people, Totten goes a step further--comparing Iran with Egypt and where they may be headed:
Iran and Egypt are in many ways each others’ opposites. Egypt’s government doesn’t believe this crap, but many if not most of its people do. Hysterical nonsense like this is the molten core of the Iranian government’s ideology, but vastly fewer people who live in Iran take it seriously.

Israel today is at war with Tehran and has a peace treaty with Cairo, but I for one won’t be remotely surprised if the situation ten years from now is reversed.
It kind of makes you wonder why there are so many countries eager to appease the Muslim world--and fighting over who will get to arm them.

And don't forget that Egypt is where the Coptic Christians were killed on New Years Day.
