Russia has sent two nuclear-powered submarines to patrol Eastern Mediterranean waters around Cyprus and enforce the island's right to explore for undersea oil and gas in its territorial seas, according to information from Defencenet.gr (Greece), citing a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman. But Ahmadinejad is going out of his way to thumb his nose at the US:
Alexander Lukashevich said that Russia supports Cyprus and guarantees its security if it is threatened.
The Russian move is being interpreted as a clear warning to Turkey to stay away from Noble Energy's drilling sites.
Iranian naval vessels to be deployed near U.S. sea borders: commanderYup, those 2 giants of the Middle East are sure going to show Russia and the US a thing or two.
The Navy commander says Iran plans to deploy naval vessels in the Atlantic Ocean near maritime borders of the United States.
“As the global arrogance (forces of imperialism) have a (military) presence near our sea borders, we also plan to have a strong presence near the U.S. sea borders with the help of the soldiers who are loyal to the vali-e faqih (supreme jurisprudent),” Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Tuesday.
But I wonder--check out the Iranian naval commander's list:
The top commander added the presence of Iranian naval units in the Bab el-Mandeb, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Suez Canal is a great honor for the Iranian nation and other Islamic countries.I don't see any reference to the Baltic Sea.
However Iran’s naval operations will not be limited to these bodies of water and “we should have a strong presence in all open seas,” he insisted.
I'm sure though, that if Iran would send their much-vaunted navy there, Russia would give them a 21-gun salute.
Or less, depending on how many it takes to give Iran's navy a hint.
Technorati Tag: Iran and Turkey and Ahmadinejad and Erdogan.
