The European Union and Sweden Tuesday contributed €24.7 million to the payment of the January salaries and pensions of around 84,300 Palestinian civil servants and pensioners in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, according to an EU press release. On that point, a friend noted that while pouring millions into the West Bank and Gaza, the EU leadership -- embodied by Merkel and Sarkozy -- say that they can't give Greece previously promised funds to pay its debts because "they owe it to the EU taxpayer" not to give more money to Greece until it applies further austerity measures. Those austerity measures include dismissing about 15,000 civil servants which according to the EU, IMF, & ECB are superfluous.
Imagine if the EU applied that kind of control to the funding they supply to Fatah and Hamas?
Apparently, it doesn't bother anyone at the EU that many if not most of the PA's civil servants are superfluous.
Bottom line: harsh standards are applied to Greece where the economic situation is dire while the Pal Arabs are indulged.
Technorati Tag: EU and Greece and Palestinians.
I think there is a problem with funding the Palestinians, and yes Europeans in general hate Jews. However, the Greek deficit as of 2010 was 24 billion euros. Official aid to the Palestinians was less than one billion euros. That doesn't include NGO's however so the number could be maybe a billion euros. If you think like a European who is 1. trying to destroy Israel and 2. save the euro, there is no logical reason to help Greece until it helps itself. On the other hand, giving free money to NGO's and Palestinians does destroy Israel. The policy makes enough sense to me. As Rav Kahana said (paraphrasing) "I understand the Arabs and they understand me."
