UNESCO's Latest Failure: Hands Control Of Church of the Nativity To Palestinian Regime

A Christian businessman who asked not to be identified said the conditions of Christians in Bethlehem and its surroundings had deteriorated ever since the area was handed over to the PA in 1995.

...People are running away because the Palestinian government isn't doing anything to protect them and their property against Muslim thugs. Of course not all the Muslims are responsible, but there is a general feeling that Christians have become easy prey."
Bethlehem Christians fear neighbors by Khaled Abu Toameh, Thursday, January 25, 2007

Last year in October 2011, UNESCO cheated on its own rules when it admitted "Palestine" as a member of UNESCO after a vote of 107-14 out of 173. Thus UNESCO allowed "Palestine" as a member despite the fact it fell short of the 2/3 vote necessary to actually admit a member according to UNESCO's own rules.

This bit of dishonesty was a hint of the corruption of one more branch of the UN, and a sign of things to come.

The dishonesty of UNESCO only invites further lies, as the Palestinian regime claimed the Church of the Nativity was in danger--and it should be left to the Palestinian Arabs to save it:
In 'Jesus’ Birthplace in Danger.' Not!, we are informed by UN Watch of the latest fairy-tale that Abbas and the Palestinian Authority has concocted, suggesting:
“Birthplace of Jesus: the Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage route, Bethlehem” is under urgent danger and worthy of special U.N. protection, a declaration that could only further inflame the region.

In its submission, the PLO claims that “the Israeli occupation,” which is “hampering the supply of appropriate materials,” creates an “emergency situation” that needs to be addressed by “an emergency measure.”
Despite the fact that the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)--which advises UNESCO's World Heritage Committee--debunked the various claims of the Arabs as false, UNESCO again decided to ignore the facts as UNESCO names Church of Nativity as first Palestinian World Heritage site

As a result of the UN's negligence, control of the Church of the Nativity is handed to the Palestinian regime:

UNESCO, like the UN Human Rights Council, is another example of the failure of the UN to promote peace in the world.

  1. While I agree that UNESCO's action is offensive and unjustified, I am unclear as to why you say that this gives the PA control.

  2. UNESCO is taking a concrete step that recognizes the sovereignty of the Palestinian Authority over the area.
