Iran Slapped In The Face By Ban Ki-Moon And Egypt's Morsi

I wrote last week that the little get-together of the 120 members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Iran was a slap in the face for Obama, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon's attending only made it worse.

Anne Bayefsky wrote similarly only yesterday that Ki-Moon's attendence of the Non-Aligned Movement meeting underscored Obama's failure.

But we can takes some small consolation in that the meeting will not be a total success for Iran.

Max Boot writes that Ban Ki-Moon and Morsi spoiled Iran's show:
The ayatollahs had made much of the attendance of President Mohammad Morsi of Egypt–the largest Arab state–and of Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon of the United Nations. But they could not have liked what they heard from the two prominent visitors. Morsi openly came out in support of the revolt being waged by the Syrian people against Bashar Assad–Iran’s closest ally in the regime. “The Syrian people are fighting with courage, looking for freedom and human dignity,” he said prompting the Syrian ambassador to walk out.

Ban also denounced the repression carried out by the Syrian government with Iranian help. Then, even better, he upbraided the Iranian leadership for threatening to annihilate Israel and for denying the Holocaust. “I strongly reject threats by any member state to destroy another or outrageous attempts to deny historical facts, such as the Holocaust,” he said.
As Boot points out, Iran is capable of taking such embarrassment in stride and will continue to pose a threat as it advances its nuclear program. The fact that the meeting was held in Iran and that 120 member nations sent their representatives there in spite Iran's role as a major facilitator of global terrorism speaks louder than the comments of the two leaders.
