Christine Chinkin was chosen to be part of the Goldstone Commission in spite of the fact that she signed an open letter during Operation Cast Lead, condemning Israel for war crimes.
Now, in choosing a committee to investigate the implementation of the Goldstone Report, the UN has outdone itself. Navanethem (Navi) Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has chosen South African lawyer Ahmed Motala to coordinate the work of the new committee.
This is the same Motala who wrote:
The war in Gaza and the killing of innocent Palestinians is not about Hamas, but entirely about the forthcoming elections in Israel. Binyamin Netanyahu of Likud, Tzipi Livni of Kadima and Ehud Barak of Labour are all vying for the position of Prime Minister. What better way to gain the support of the Israeli electorate than to wage a war against Hamas; to give no quarter to the enemy and kill innocent civilians.Think about that: he is not just casting aspersions on Israeli leaders, accusing them of war crimes--Motala is accusing Israelis as a whole of actively wanting leaders who kill innocent civilians.
No doubt, people will come forward to make all manner of excuses for Motala and defend him. These people will rush to describe anyone connected to the committee as being 'respected' etc...
The fact remains that Motala is an anti-Israel racist who has made a heinous accusation against Israel as a whole--and for that reason, he should be dismissed immediately from having any connection to this committee.
The clock is clicking.
Technorati Tag: Ahmed Motala.
But he won't be.
ReplyDeleteIsrael should not extend its cooperation to another biased UN panel with a clear anti-Israel political agenda.
This is the only way Israel can stave off Arab-instigated UN lawfare and protect itself from future Goldstone investigations into its affairs.
