WHAT WERE THEY CELEBRATING? The Corner is still discussing English Anti-Semitism, particularly Derbyshire's comment yesterday:
I think that English antisemitism—which Eliot took up as his own—is the mildest and most harmless variety of the sentiment, and really not worth anyone's bothering about.
My own 2 cents--this from the BBC last year:
Jews in the UK have begun a series of special events to mark the 350th anniversary of their re-admission to England.

During 2006 Jewish communities throughout the country will be celebrating one of the most remarkable turning points in English history.

They will come together under the banner 'Three and a Half Centuries of British Jewish Life' for a stream of landmark events to celebrate Jewish life including exhibitions, concerts, plays, and dinners.
Expulsion

England became the first European country to expel Jews in 1290 after a long period of persecution.
Mild? Or just seasonal.
