Many of you likely saw the vice presidential debate last Thursday night.  It was not the run-away Republican win that the first presidential debate had been, but Ryan carried the day with a respectable performance:  With one exception, every poll I saw declared him the winner. A CNN poll of people who had watched, done right after the debate, showed 48% declaring Republican contender Representative Paul Ryan the winner, and 44% Vice President Joe Biden.

Three reactions to the Joe Biden-Paul Ryan debate last night:

Middle East dominance: The foreign policy aspects of the debate focused almost exclusively on Libya, Israel, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. Binyamin Netanyahu's name was invoked eight times, far more often than any other person other than Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The Euro crisis, the recent reelection of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, and the country of India all went unmentioned, while relations with Russia and China came up only glancingly. So chaotic, volatile, and murderous has the Middle East become that American politicians are quasi-experts on it to the point of naming the rival Afghan valleys they'd visited. The region has also become an integral part of a voter's decision on whom to vote for president. That Tunisia, Turkey, Jordan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain never came up, while Egypt and energy were mentioned only once, points the depth of the Middle East issues bench.

On "Hot Air", Ed Morrissey writes about Newt Gingrich's appearance on CBS this morning, responding to former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm that Biden’s Benghazi response will “haunt” Obama:

GINGRICH: Let me just say — Governor Granholm just put her finger on a key word. ”Who do you trust?” The Vice President of the United States doubled down on the President, who has for three weeks now methodically misled the American people.

Describing how far the Obama campaign has sunk in its goal to win the presidential election at any cost, Daniel Henninger writes about Obama and the L-Word:

The Obama campaign's resurrection of "liar" as a political tool is odious because it has such a repellent pedigree. It dates to the sleazy world of fascist and totalitarian propaganda in the 1930s. It was part of the milieu of stooges, show trials and dupes. These were people willing to say anything to defeat their opposition. Denouncing people as liars was at the center of it. The idea was never to elevate political debate but to debauch it.
