Should the Palestinians at last acquire a state of their own,
Sharon will have done more to bring it about than any Palestinian,
Arafat included, ever.
This comes from an editorial from today's National Review entitled "A Leader’s Courage"
While I can understand the sentiments, of course this is not true.
Arafat first brought the Palestinian Arabs to the world's attention--through terrorism.
Arafat maintained the world's attention on the Palestinian issue--through terrorism.
Arafat was invited to the UN, took out his gun and threatened--more terrorism.
Arafat countered his obligations under Oslo with--terrorism.
Arafat continued to promise peace in English and to his own people encouraged--terrorism.
Let's not overlook what Arafat accomplished and give him his due.
After all, the Palestinian Arabs still do.
And the West continues to pay the price.

I don't disagree with the editorial. It's one thing getting attention. It's another thing making it so. In fact I'd go so far to say that Netanyahu has done more to create a Palestinian state than any Arab.
Oh, I agree with you in terms of that. But let's face it, would the issue have been brought to the fore where real politicians can set things in motion, if terrorists did not get people's attention and--amazingly--their 'sympathy'? Arafat not only got people's attention, he twisted the West around his little finger and created the mythos of the 'Palestinian People'.
