Connections Israel, a nine year old, educational, not-for-profit organization based in Jerusalem recently began developing a multi-media exhibition which will reflect the solidarity of Jews around the world for the people of Sderot.
Sderot, a city on the northwest corner of the Negev, bordering the former Gush Katif, has been under terrorist missile attack for over seven years. Since the expulsion of the Jewish communities from Gush Katif, the missile attacks have increased, both in intensity and frequency. These attacks have sent the members of the 10,000 families into shelters and panic. It has made life unbearable to the point that most children were sent to summer camps miles away from the region, some traveling to Europe, the United States and Canada. The region has taken a tremendous economic hit. With residents spending less time in town, the local business has slowed to a trickle and those residents still in town find it both physically and emotionally difficult to leave their homes and shelters.
This Jewish Solidarity Exhibition will begin this December in the city of Sderot and then move to other cities in Israel and, with appropriate sponsorship, around the world. The exhibition is an outgrowth of the ongoing efforts of Connections Israel to raise the awareness and sensitivity, of Jews living outside of Israel, of their brothers and sisters in Israel.
The core of the exhibition will be original works of juried art, created by Jewish children, from the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, from all over the world. A round trip to Israel will be given to the artist who creates the best over all drawing in the exhibition.
The exhibition will include photographs of Jewish children from all over the world and from Sderot, as well as numerous letters of Support and Blessing, received from Connection Israel's Project Sderot letter writing program.
In addition, various artists will present their personal work reflecting Jewish Solidarity.
The exhibition will be mounted by the students of the Sapir Academic College, located in Sderot, under the supervision of Michal Shamir, the director of the art department. The College campus took a direct hit of a Kassam missile and the students and faculty also have to deal with the emotional damage.
