Our Rav--who had known Rabbi Shimon Eider, TZ"L for a number of years--told us he recalled that the first time that he asked a shaila, Rabbi Eider told him where the relevant Tosofos was and where it was located on the Daf--as well as the reference in Shulchan Aruch. Our Rav said he just assumed that that Rabbi Eider happened to be 'in the inyan. Yet the next time--and on subsequent occasions--Rabbi Eider again and again was able to quote relevant sources.
Yet Rabbi Eider did not have a photographic memory--he just knew the material.
We were also told that Rabbi Eider had been in the process of republishing his sefer on Eruv and that there had been plans to republish his sefer on Hilchos Shabbos, which had first been published many years ago and was in 'typewriter' font.
Rabbi Eider was a trailblazer in the writing of halacha seforim, and originated the format where the text is in colloquial english with the notes at the bottom of the page in hebrew.
