Hamas leader Khaled Meshal warned on Tuesday that Islamist militant groups would back Iran if the Islamic Republic was attacked by Israel, Iranian state television reported. It's not at all clear why anyone should take Hamas's Mashal seriously about this, since Hamas is a proxy of Iran..
"All Islamist militant groups will form a united front with Iran against Israel if it attacks Iran," Meshal told a news conference.
Israel and the United States have not ruled out military action if diplomacy fails to resolve the row over Iranian nuclear work that the West suspects is aimed at making bombs.
The Hamas leader added: "We are all parts of the same body... We all should fight against the mutual enemy. But how, the leaders will decide based on our capacities."
One shouldn't forget that if anything, the Arab world mistrusts Iran and would like to see it taken down a few pegs.
In any case, when it comes to choosing sides, Palestinian are notorious for making bad choices--like their penchant for supporting Saddam Hussein.
Maybe Ahmadinejad put him up to it--could it be that Ahmadinejad is hedging his bets on the possibility that Israel will try to take out Iran's nuclear reactors?
Here's hoping.
UPDATE:Oops--looks like Meshal forgot to look at the polls:
A survey by YouGov, commissioned by Qatar’s Doha Debates and published last week, found that on the Arab side 80 per cent of those surveyed do not believe Iran’s assurances that it is not trying to develop nuclear weapons.[hat tip: RubinReports]
The poll, which surveyed more than 1,000 people in 18 Arab countries last month, found that most see Iran as a bigger threat to security than Israel, with a third believing Iran is just as likely as Israel to target Arab countries.
