When the "social justice" (tzedek chevrati) movement used the exact same imagery this past summer, no one batted an eyelash.
Opposition Leader Tzippi Livni didn't crawl out from under a rock to blast the sacrilegious usage of a yellow star. Defense Minister Ehud Barak was strangely silent. IDF Radio, Haaretz, YNET, TV Channels 2 and 10 overlooked it.
No one cares. Social Justice trumps all. And the Ultra Orthodox will be blamed no matter what they do...

Is there any difference between the symbolism used by the Charedim and the social "justice protester"?
The end result is that the Ultra-Orthodox will only be more convinced that the media is out to get them.
And who is to say they are wrong?

From this perspective you are correct. Perhaps a wholesale ban on Holocaust imagery for modern protests should be banned. It cheapens the memory of such a horrid event when comparing it to other problems within a society. Better to save these images for protesting against other genocides.
Interesting idea, but there is no way to back that up.
Even Muslims have taken to wearing a yellow star--which is ironic since it was the Muslims themselves who initiated the practice of having non-Muslims wear special clothing to indicate their inferior status under Islam.
And so it goes.
