Arlene Kushner on American-Born Palestinian Shot by IDF While About To Throw A Molotov Cocktail

From Arlene Kushner:

Tough

The word “tough” has different meanings, and I am actually using it in more than one sense in this posting.  The first meaning – difficult to deal with – applies to the video directly below.  From “Jewish Voices on Campus,” it is exceedingly important and I ask you all to take the time to see it:

~~~~~~~~~~
The second meaning I want to apply is slang, as in “You don’t like it? Tough.”
Orwa Abd El-Wahab Hammad, from the village of Silwad near Ramallah, was killed by the IDF on Friday.  Arab sources said he was 14, the IDF says he was 17.  Born in America, he has lived in Arab villages in Samaria since he was a small boy.  He was shot because he was about to throw a Molotov cocktail into on-coming traffic on Highway 60.  A Molotov cocktail is a home-made incendiary device, serving as a fire bomb, that can set its target on fire. Thrown at a car, it could be lethal and might cause multiple deaths.
Video and Paper: International Peacekeepers Cannot Replace the IDF in the Defense of Israel
Dore Gold
Dore Gold
Dore Gold has published a paper describing the dangers to Israel's security created by allowing international peacekeepers into the West Bank as part of an agreement with the Abbas regime, including a focus on the importance of having the IDF remain in the Jordan Valley.
This topic is especially important now since the subject may well develop into a major point of disagreement between Israel and the US as negotiations with the Palestinian Arabs continues.
Entitled International Peacekeepers Cannot Replace the IDF in the Defense of Israel, Dore Gold emphasizes 5 key points:
Muslims In The IDF--It's Not Just The Druse
Recently, while driving by the Israeli settlement of Nokdim (where Avigdor Lieberman lives), I picked up a hitchhiking soldier. We started chatting, and I asked the soldier his name. "Mustafa," he said. "You're a Muslim?" I asked. "Yes," he answered, "from Haifa."
Aryeh Tepper, Minorities in the IDF, in Jewish Ideas Daily, July 27, 2011
And that is how the article begins.
One of the interesting points the article deals with is the different groups of Muslims who serve in the Israeli army:
After all, in the eyes of many Arab Israelis—Palestinians, according to their own self-definition—Ameer and his fellow Muslim soldiers in the IDF are nothing less than traitors.
Obviously, this attitude is not held among all minority groups.
The IDF Could Pick Up A Point Or Two From This Seven-Year-Old
In the hopes of improving our daughter's writing skills, we gave her a small notebook, so that she would start writing something--anything!--in it. Instead, it looks like her friends are going to be improving their writing skills instead.
Here is the cover of the notebook.
Don't be taken in by the pink, furry, cat exterior...
During recess at school, their favorite game is Boys vs. Girls, and based on the plan that my daughter's friend wrote up, those boys don't have a chance.
For those who cannot--or have forgotten how to--read 7-year-old, the above reads:
A. We sneak on them.
B. We hear what their plan is against us.
C. We get them.
Simple and to the point.
Considering the way things are going up in Lebanon, the IDF may want to keep this plan in mind.
Video of Actual IDF Combat in Lebanon
Hat Tip: Hot Air
Michael Totten is guest-blogging at Andrew Sullivan's blog, where he links to a video you should see:
Israeli video journalist Itai Anghel went into Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon with the Nahal Brigade and shot 25 minutes of riveting house-to-house combat footage with a night vision lens.
The Hezbollah fighters wore Israeli uniforms.
Note: To watch the movie, copy and paste the url below into a new window. For some reason it won't work if you click on it.
The movie is very, very intense.
