Suddenly, Abbas Says The Holocaust Actually Happened

While in the Netherlands, trying to get support for the Palestinian plan to ask the UN for recognition in September--Abbas gave an interview.

Among other things, Abbas claimed he agreed that 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust:
Is it true that you deny the extent of the Holocaust in which six million Jews were killed?

"No, I do not deny the Holocaust. I know that the Holocaust took place during WWII. I have studied and written a book about it. I believe that many Jews were murdered and that other peoples of other nationalities were murdered . So I agree, I admit there were pogroms, that genocide was committed during the war against the Jews by the Nazi regime. "

How many Jews do you think were killed?

"I've heard from the Israelis that there were six million. I can accept that."

So you yourself are convinced of that number?

"I accept what they say. If they say six million, six million I say. It is up to them to decide, because they know better than me." [translated from the Dutch with Google Translate, and some minor changes for readability]
While it's very nice of Abbas to agree that 6 million Jews were murdered by the Nazis during WWII, it would be even nicer if he would say this in Arabic to his own people.

Instead, he has told the Arab world the exact opposite.

Abbas mentioned that he wrote a book on the subject. Actually, it was a thesis he wrote, entitled: The Other Side: The Secret Relations between Nazism and the Leadership of the Zionist Movement not exactly the kind of place you would expect to find confirmation of the Holocaust.

Palestinian Media Watch has a translation of a piece of Abbas's thesis, provided by the Wiesenthal Center:
"Having more victims meant greater rights and stronger privilege to join the negotiation table for dividing the spoils of war once it was over. However, since Zionism was not a fighting partner -- suffering victims in a battle -- it had no escape but to offer up human beings, under any name, to raise the number of victims, which they could then boast of at the moment of accounting…

It seems that the interest of the Zionist movement...is to inflate this figure so that their gains will be greater. This led them to emphasize this figure in order to gain the solidarity of international public opinion with Zionism. Many scholars have debated the figure of six million and reached stunning conclusions -- fixing the number of Jewish victims at only a few hundred thousand."

It's pity that Abbas did not tell the interviewer what he normally tells the Palestinians--and it's shame that Abbas hasn't got the guts to tell the Palestinians what he admits to when speaking to the Western world.
