Arlene Kushner On Palestinian Statehood, The UN, Negotiations And The Clintons

From Arlene Kushner:

"One Day"
The sentiments of Caroline Glick's Latma video song "One Day," done for Rosh Hashana, resonated with me so thoroughly that I decided to start my post with it:
One day, there will sanity in the world.  In the meantime, be strong, don't cave, know that we are watched from Above.

And then let me share a most optimistic demographic report from Yoram Ettinger (emphasis in his original):

 From DG:

New York Times Israel Op-ed Index for September 2011

1) Turkey, Israel and the Flotilla - Editorial - September 2, 2011
Israel accepted the findings by the United Nations and said that it hoped to mend ties with Turkey, but it reiterated that it would not apologize. Two weeks ago, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to apologize to Turkey. American officials are going to have to keep trying with both sides. We don’t blame Israel for wondering if Turkey is keeping this conflict going to burnish its standing in the Arab world. Turkey is risking a lot, including billions in trade with Israel and its reputation as a responsible international player. Israel certainly doesn’t need to be any more isolated than it is. Israel should apologize for the deaths. And Turkey should stop upping the ante.
I'm surprised here.

Barry Rubin: Why Most of The Mass Media Can’t Report Honestly on Israel—Or Other Middle East Issues

By Barry Rubin
Underlying any other factor regarding attitudes toward Israel in the Media-University-Government (MUG) complex is the programmatic and ideological problem faced in honestly understanding and explaining Israel’s behavior.

To report truthfully would require comprehending and communicating the following two paragraphs:

–Most Israelis believe, on the basis of their experience during the 1990s’ Oslo era and with the “peace process” generally, that Palestinian leaders cannot and will not make peace, and that most Arabs and Muslims still want to destroy Israel. As a result, they explain, past Israeli concessions have made Israel’s situation worse, risks to show that Israel wants peace have not persuaded onlookers, withdrawals from territory have only led to that territory being used to launch attacks on Israel.

–In justifying their stance, Israelis cite the extremism of Iran; the advances of Hamas and Hizballah; the growing radicalism and Islamist influence in the Egyptian revolution, and other such factors. In addition, they worry that the Obama Administration policy is undermining Israel and enabling a growing extremism in the region. This is a prevailing viewpoint across the political spectrum.

Like Biden, Hillary Tosses Her Principles For Obama

We've already seen Biden flip-flop from supporting clemency for Pollard to bragging he got Obama to reject the idea.

Now we see that Hillary Clinton also flip-flops for Obama--claiming the law she voted for recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is unconstitutional:

Video: Biden Favors, Opposes #Pollard Clemency--Whichever Gets Jewish Vote

In the middle of a meeting with 15 rabbis in Boca Raton, Fla., last week, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. took a punch meant for his boss.
Obama Turns to Biden to Reassure Jewish Voters, and Get Them to Contribute, Too, New York Times, September 30, 2011

And now we know how true that is!

At that meeting, Biden boasted that he personally blocked Obama's plan to grant Pollard clemency:
One of the rabbis asked why Jonathan Pollard, the Israeli spy convicted in 1986, was still in prison. Mr. Biden, on a mission to shore up support for President Obama, replied forcefully, according to several people at the meeting.

“President Obama was considering clemency, but I told him, ‘Over my dead body are we going to let him out before his time,’ ” Mr. Biden said. “If it were up to me, he would stay in jail for life.”
Now it turns out that back during the 2008 campaign, while bragging what a good friend he is of Israel, Biden said that though he opposed a pardon--"there is a rationale in my view why Pollard should be granted leniency (1:20):

Biden Sent To Reassure Jews--Says #Pollard Release "Over My Dead Body"

Remember Biden?
I haven't come across Biden's name in months.

And yet here here is Vice President Joe Biden bragging that he is the reason Pollard has not been released:
In the middle of a meeting with 15 rabbis in Boca Raton, Fla., last week, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. took a punch meant for his boss.

One of the rabbis asked why Jonathan Pollard, the Israeli spy convicted in 1986, was still in prison. Mr. Biden, on a mission to shore up support for President Obama, replied forcefully, according to several people at the meeting.

Many people are obviously and understandably frustrated that Israel is so badly treated by the Mug-gers (media, university, and government) complex in much of the Western world. One can fume endlessly against their behavior (double standards, falsified history) but that accomplishes nothing.

So the immediate alternative is to say what is needed is creative new ideas, with the assumption that these ideas will solve the problem or at least make things better. This is logical and fits many other situations but it usually doesn’t apply to Israel’s case. Why not?
