A Mixed Bag

Today we'll start with the good news.

Ariel University has been an institution of higher learning, situated in Ariel -- a major city in Samaria, 25 miles east of Tel Aviv -- since 2005.  At that time it was Ariel College and had the highest student enrollment of any public college in Israel. But the school's intention was to seek full university status -- which would provide it with the ability to grant doctoral degrees, as well as increase its funding for research and its prestige. 

In 2010, it was granted the title Ariel University Center of Samaria, but was not yet accorded official university status.  In July of this year, the Council for Higher Education in Judea and Samaria granted it this status.  In September, the Cabinet approved it.

But it wasn't yet a done deal.

In the latest manifestation of media bias, the British tabloid, The Guardian, took it upon itself in April to declare not only that Jerusalem was not the capital of Israel, but that Tel Aviv was.

In a lighthearted jab at The Guardian, HonestReporting went to Tel Aviv, looking for the capital of Israel:

Sultan Knish writes in Liberating Our Jerusalem, about the absurd situation we have arrived at through the application of diplomacy, in the service of appeasement:

It would be absolutely inconceivable for the international community to denounce an ethnically cleansed group which survived attempted genocide for moving back into a city where they had lived. It is however standard policy at the State Department and the Foreign Office to denounce Jews living in those parts of Jerusalem that had been ethnically cleansed by Muslims, as "settlers" living in "settlements", and describe them as an "obstruction to peace." Peace being the state of affairs that sets in when an ethnic cleansing goes unchallenged.

Only when the Jewish residents were driven from their homes in 1948 was the city divided between East and West.

Video: Indivisible Jerusalem. There is No Arab East Jerusalem

The division of Jerusalem into "East" and "West" imposed by the Jordanian occupation for a brief period of 19 years is no longer possible in a city which has dramatically grown and changed over the last 44 years. 270,000 Arabs and 200,000 Jews live in the mosaic of neighborhoods called "East Jerusalem." Dividing Jerusalem is not technically feasible due to the intermingling of populations, neighborhoods, and vital infrastructures.

Throughout history, the only times when all residents of Jerusalem: Christians, Muslims, and Jews, have enjoyed freedom of religion, and other benefits of democracy have been under Israeli sovereignty. The Jewish and Arab residents of Jerusalem share medical and welfare facilities, academic institutions, shopping centers and recreation sites. Recent public opinion polls show that a majority of Jerusalem Arabs would prefer to remain under Israeli sovereignty.

Proof Abbas Lied About East Jerusalem At Doha

This week PA president Mahmoud Abbas held a highly inflammatory speech during a conference in Doha where the ‘defense’ of Al Quds (Jerusalem) was discussed.

He accused Israel of conducting a campaign that “uses the most ugly means to erase the Arab-Islamic character of East Jerusalem”. He also said that “Muslims should fight ‘Judaization’ of the city”, meaning replacing Arabs with Jews (ethnic cleansing)

The best rebuttal of Abbas’ false claim about the ethnic cleansing of the Arab residents of Jerusalem are the population statistics of the city. They show an increase of Arab citizens in Jerusalem ever since the Six Day War in 1967.

But the publication of a new five year plan that aims to improve the living conditions of the Arab residents in East Jerusalem by the Jerusalem Municipalty on February 29^th is the latest evidence that Abbas lied.

Only when the Jewish residents were driven from their homes in 1948 was the city divided between East and West.

The 19 year division of Jerusalem is being exploited as a reason to divide Israel's capital today.
