Assistance has included equipment and technical advice on blocking and monitoring communication between dissidents, and drew on the Iranian authorities' own experience of putting down an uprising that followed the June 2009 disputed election.
The Telegraph, Syria: Iran secretly aiding repression of protests
Considering Iran's efforts to help Assad quash the protests in Syria--imagine the world's relief to hear that 'Iran backs efforts to end Syria crisis':
A senior member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) says the Islamic Republic supports efforts by Muslim and regional countries to help resolve the crisis in Syria. So Iran supports Muslim efforts so far to help resolve the crisis. Well, other than Turkey, which has warned Syria to resolve the crisis without further bloodshed--who in the region has done anything? The Arab League was late in even condemning the Syrian killing of unarmed protesters. In fact, anger at Arab League inaction led to a Molotov cocktail being thrown at their offices in Cairo.
“Iran endorses efforts by the Muslim world and regional countries to put an end to the crisis in Syria,” said Chairman of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi to reporters in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.
Iran welcomes the path of reform taken by Damascus because it will lead to the establishment of political parties instead of a single-party system, the release of prisoners and a national dialogue among various Syrian groups, Boroujerdi added, IRNA reported.
Given past efforts by Iran to help Assad crush the protests, just how reassuring is it that now Iran is publicly talking about getting involved.
The way Iran describes the situation also flies in the face of reality--it is not clear why kind of reform is actually being carried out by the Syrian regime, unless one is talking about reforming the size of the Syrian population.
Let's face it, Iran's interest in Syria is to maintain support for Hezbollah and generally maintain its threat against Israel.
Besides, at this point Syria is probably the only country right now that is friendly to Iran.
